Lake Fausse Pointe

The crown jewel of the Atchafalaya Swamp is Lake Fausse Pointe. This 12,000 acre lake is home to the oldest cypress trees in the entire swamp.

The Lake Fausse Pointe trail loop brings paddlers along the southern portion of the lake and amongst the giant cypress. Though a daunting open water paddle is included in the journey, the reward of the trees and the wildlife along the rim of the lake more than makes up for it. While enjoying the swamp around you, make sure to look up, as osprey and even the occasional bald eagle may be flying above.

  • Trail Rating:  Level 3
  • Distance:  13.6 miles
  • Estimated Time of Completion: 7 hours
  • Safety Concerns: The lake can become violent in high winds, and thunderstorms are frequent.
  • What’s Cool?: Some of the cypress trees along the northern portion of the lake are up to 1,000 years old.
