Lake Martin

The swamp of Lake Martin is one of the most recognized in the south. Only a 15 to 20 minute drive from Lafayette, LA, the 800 acre swamp and lake includes much of the scenery and wildlife that people are looking for when visiting a swamp ecosystem.

The trail is designed to have paddlers travel along the outer edge of the lake through the cypress and tupelo trees. With the trail being fairly short, it is best for paddlers to take it slow as they paddle so that they can soak in the views and wildlife. Please note: The rookery is closed to boat traffic from February 1 to July 31 while the birds are nesting.

  • Trail Rating:  Level 1
  • Distance:  3.1 miles
  • Estimated Time of Completion: 3 hours
  • Safety Concerns: The lake can be busy with boaters during the fall/winter hunting season.
  • What’s Cool?: Lots of wildlife! Paddlers will see plenty of large wading birds and alligators.
